What are Unitarians ?
UNITARIANS BELIEVE . . .
- In Freedom to think for yourself and to find
and follow your own true way.
- In Reason as an important, though not the
only, guide in matters of belief.
- In Tolerance of others' beliefs.
- In Acceptance of all regardless of your faith
or doubts, gender or
sexual orientation, age, race, disability or class.
- That we all have the right to seek truth and meaning
for ourselves
based upon our own life-experience, reflection upon it and intuitive
understanding of our own conscience.
- That the best setting for this is a community that
welcomes you for
what you are - beliefs, doubts, questions and all !
- That people should enjoy individuality in spiritual
matters.
- That respect for integrity is preferable to the pressure
to conform.
- That the final authority of our individual faith
lies within our own conscience.
UNITARIANS are AIDED and INSPIRED by . . .
- The example and spiritual insights of others.
- The writings of the various faith-traditions of humanity.
- The use of reason and honest doubt in search of truth.
- Constructive tolerance and openness towards the sincerely
held beliefs of others.
UNITARIANS THINK of JESUS as . . .
- A great teacher and prophet in the rabbinic tradition
of Judaism.
- A powerful example of integrity, courage and compassion.
- Divine in the sense that his life & work symbolises
the divinity in everyone.
- A major figure in humanity's spiritual journey.
UNITARIANS are often called 'RELIGIOUS LIBERALS' . .
.
- Religious because we unite to celebrate
and affirm values that
embrace and reflect a greater reality than self.
- Liberal because we claim no exclusive
revelation or status, and because
we afford respect and tolerance to those who follow different paths
of faith.
