| Multi-Faith Garden
of Remembrance
A few years ago a Buddhist living in Kendal wished to
have the remains of his late
sister, an Orthodox Christian, brought to England, for interment from
the family
village in Sri Lanka. He approached several local clergy, but without
success.
The Buddhist Group regularly used our Chapel for meetings,
and it was after
one of the meetings that he approached our Minister about the interment.
The minister was only too pleased to carry out his wishes, and asked
him
to choose a place in our gardens where he would like his sister's remains
interred. His choice was our small, but beautiful, side garden.
The interment was carried out in the spring of 2000 with a multi-faith
service
incorporating Buddhist and Unitarian elements.
At the next meeting of the Chapel Committee the members
agreed that
our side garden should become our "Multi-Faith Garden of Remembrance".
A memorial stone was made by a local stonemason, and the garden was
dedicated with a multi-faith service in September of the same year.
The ashes of people from several faiths and none - Bahai,
Christian, Unitarian
and non-religious - now rest in this beautiful and peaceful garden.
Not all of them are local, - families from other parts of the United
Kingdom,
whose parents or grandparents have ties with the local area, now
have the remains of their loved ones interred in our
"Multi-Faith Garden of Remembrance".
